A youth center in South Seattle serving at-risk teens

In the Fall of 2017, Urban Impact and Seattle Youth for Christ joined forces to continue the work of the Othello Youth Center (formally knowing at the Youth Reach Out Center run by the Union Gospel Mission). In January, after staff were hired and trained, the doors were re-opened to young people and in just a few short months we are reaching hundreds of kids a week.

The Othello Youth Center Hours:

Tues-Thurs: 4-8pm

Friday: 4pm-12am

Here is note from our Program Director, Chaffawn Smith:

There is so much in life that can give you joy. For me, it’s working with at-risk youth. My name is Chaffawn Smith and I am a Program Director for the Othello Youth Center. My exciting journey started three months ago. I relocated from Kansas City, MO to be a part of the work Jesus is doing here in South Seattle. At the Othello Youth Center we create a “home away from home” where we serve, fellowship and worship God with youth from the community. It brings me so much joy and excitement to share my love with these kids. As a program director, my job is to create a creative space that supports their gifts, talents and hobbies. We do this through a number of ways — most notably through a dynamic curriculum that ranges from leadership training, anti-drug and anti-violence sessions, and creative outlets like creating our own music videos and parties, or honing public speaking skills. And still, above all, the Gospel remains the unwavering focus.

Growing up in the Midwest (also known as “the bible belt”) presented a stark contrast to life here in the Northwest. Most people back home had some introduction to Jesus. So, when I moved here,  it was shocking to realize how alienated so many Seattle youth seem to be from The Truth and the teachings of Jesus. Yet, while it is shocking, it’s also inspiring. Knowing that I have the opportunity to share the story of Jesus with kids that have never heard fuels me now more than ever. Even more, I’m filled with joy as I’ve watched God use me to change the lives of kids. Kids who once scoffed at the idea of devotions are now engaged and curious about who God is. It’s a change I thank God for everyday! It is proof that God called me here for such a time as this.
